James Valentine Mackell, Jr., MD, of New Orleans, formerly of Philadelphia, departed this life on January 27, 2018. James was born in Philadelphia on September 27, 1943, the son of James V. Mackell MD and Rosemany (McIntyre) Mackell. He was predeceased by his sister Susan Goldner. He is survived by his four daughters, Madeleine (Patrick) McCunney, Anne Mackell, Grace (Andrew) Schliep, Sarah Mackell; four grandchildren, Lila Collins, Aurora and August Schliep, and Fay McCunney; and his siblings Thomas E. Mackell MD, Rosemary O’Mara, Sally Ott, Margaret Mary Vanarsdall, and Jane Hoy.

James attended St. Joseph’s Preparatory School, St. Joseph’s University, and went on to graduate from Thomas Jefferson Medical College. Jim’s career in orthopedic surgery spanned 40 years and he served as Chief of Surgery at Nazareth Hospital. In 2012, Jim was the recipient of the Dr. Stanley J. Skromak award. He was dedicated to his patients, and had a gift for making everyone he encountered feel at ease. Jim loved literature, history, the arts, and was a member of the John Buchan Society. An avid outdoorsman, Jim could often be found exploring trails of all types both in and out of cities. Most of all, he enjoyed sharing his experiences with his daughters, brother, sisters, large extended family, and friends near and far.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a celebration of life at Manufacturer’s Country Club, 511 Dreshertown Rd, Fort Washington, PA 19034, at 12:00 PM on Wednesday, February 28, 2018. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations “in memory of Dr. James V.
