August 15, 1941 ~ July 2, 2021 (age 79) 79 Years Old

Tribute

Thomas Joseph Canale, MD passed away peacefully in his home on Friday, July 2, 2021. He was preceded in death by his parents Joseph Anthony Canale and Agnes Pollet Canale. He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Marilyn Smith Canale, his son Sean Thomas Canale, MD, his two daughters, Colleen Canale Levy (Scott) and Kimberly Canale Gregor (John), and four grandchildren, Joseph Patrick Canale, Sara Sofia Canale, Thomas Scott Levy, and Megan Elise Levy. Tom attended St. Catherine of Siena grammar school in Metairie and graduated from Jesuit High School in New Orleans and Fordham University in New York with honors . He met his wife Marilyn during their junior year abroad in France, where he studied in Dijon and at the Faculté de Science at the University of Paris.  Here, he began his appreciation, study, and love of French wines and culture, after working in the vineyards in Chambolle-Musigny. Tom received his medical doctorate training at the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans and his Otolaryngology and Maxillofacial Surgery training at Tulane University Medical Center where he continued to mentor residents throughout his career.  He worked his entire practice and served in leadership at the Browne McHardy Clinic in Metairie.  While he loved and was committed to his profession and patients, he was equally committed to interests outside of work.  Tom and Marilyn enjoyed traveling together, especially annual trips to France.  He was an avid tennis player traveling nationally and internationally with the American Medical Tennis Association and the World Medical Tennis Society.  He was known for his deep knowledge and love of French wine and was an active member and founder of several wine societies in New Orleans.  Later in life, he enjoyed golf and visited some of the world’s best known golf courses as part of their travels.  His greatest enjoyment was when his children and grandchildren could join them on their travels.  He was a dear and faithful friend to all who knew him and will be very missed and remembered. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, July 10th at St. Catherine of Siena Catholic Church with visitation immediately preceding at 11:30am.
