Thomas Richard Campbell, a retired chemist, went to his heavenly rest Saturday, November 6, 2021 at the age of 78. Tom was born in New Orleans to Ethel Margaret Everhart Campbell and Thomas Stonewall Campbell. He was an only child and the last descendent of the Everhart and Campbell families leaving behind no living relatives, but surrounded by loving neighbors and friends. Tom graduated from Benjamin Franklin High School with the class of 1961. He received a B.S. in chemistry from Northeast Louisiana State College in 1965. He was an excellent student and scored in the 99th percentile in chemistry on the Graduate Record Exam. Tom received his Master of Science in organic chemistry in 1969 from Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He joined the American Chemical Society while in college. He moved to New Jersey to work in the Research Department of the Pharmaceutical Division of CIBA-GEIGY Corporation of Summit, New Jersey. He was published three times in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and once in the Chemistry and Industry magazine. Tom always had attention to detail and his humor, tenacity and faith guided his life’s journey. He enjoyed talking to people and sharing his amazing knowledge of many subjects. Although Tom never owned or drove any vehicle, he was an honored member of the American Automobile Association. He had a passion for growing things, rare coins, and travel. He often went to New Jersey to visit his longtime friend, Carmella Sylvestry. He kept up with friends from the Benjamin Franklin High School Alumni Association. He was a member of the American Numismatic Association, New Jersey Numismatic Society, and a lifelong member of the American Chemical Society. Tom was a long-time member of the Cycad Society, and several years ago donated the majority of his cycads to them where they were auctioned off at an annual meeting. Tom was a faithful Christian and attended Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Metairie. He also enjoyed his Lutheran News, Inc. communications. You always knew what Tom wanted. He was a kind and tenderhearted soft-spoken soul who will be missed.
