Sr Kay Viellion MSC

October 18, 1937 ~ July 16, 2022 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

On Saturday morning, Sr. Kay called the nurse to let her know she was dying!  Asked if she needed anything, she stated she was fine, and her final words were: “I am going to be with Jesus.”

Sr. Kay Helen Viellion was preceded in death by her mother: Alice Fauque Mallory, her father, George Henry Viellion, Sr. and her two sisters, Georgette Sylvia Viellion and Cathy V. Monvoisin.  She is survived by her brother, George H.Viellion, Jr. (Peggy), her brother-in-law, Larry Monvoisin, her sister, Rhoda Viellion Carr (Ronald), and many nieces and nephews.

Kay was born in New Orleans and graduated from St. Louis Cathedral Grammar School and the Academy of Holy Angels.  Kay entered the Congregation of the Marianites of Holy Cross in 1955. She became a respected and beloved educator teaching at Sts. Peter and Paul, St. Christopher and Holy Angels in the New Orleans area. She also taught at St. John in Plaquemine, LA; St. Francis in Houma, LA; Academy of Immaculate Conception in Opelousas, LA, and Holy Cross in Morgan City, LA.

Kay earned her Ph.D. in Botany from the University of Nebraska in 1973. She served as assistant professor of Biology at Our Lady of Holy Cross (now UHC). She was a member of the Provincial Administration for the Louisiana province in the late 1970s and was Assistant Continental Superior in France in the 1980s. Kay’s years in France were very special to her, as she bonded deeply with the French sisters and with her mother’s French relatives. During the1990s she served as Archivist for the Alexandria/Shreveport Diocese and worked closely with Sister Madeline Sophie Hebert updating the archives of the Marianite Congregation.

Sr. Kay loved people and had friends around the world! Over the years, many of Sr. Kay’s students became her devoted friends. Due to physical limitations related to her Multiple Sclerosis, she spent the past thirteen years in nursing homes, but remained a viable presence.  In the past sixteen months at Trinity Trace Community Care Center, Covington, LA, she enjoyed local community with Sisters Owen Quintana and Barbara Richter.  Her sister, Rhoda, remained a loyal companion on the journey. Sr. Kay’s love for her God is witnessed in her final words.
