Sister Carla Maria Crabtree, baptized Josefina Teresa, also known as Sister Charles Marie or “Charlie” died peacefully at the Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in New Orleans on May 27, shortly after 9:00 p.m. The daughter of Charles H. Crabtree and Josefine Gomez Palacio Crabtree, she was born March 5, l928, in Ciudad Lerdo Durango, Mexico. She was the oldest of eleven children. Sister was preceded in death by five brothers: Henry I, Jose Francisco, Edwardo, Jorge and Henry II, and is survived by three sisters: Enriqueta, Maria Concepcion (Conchita), and Maria and two brothers; Carlos and Jaime.
Sister Carla Maria’s parents felt it important that she learn English and therefore enrolled the older girls in the Ursuline Academy Boarding School in Laredo, Texas where Sister completed her High School Education.
She entered the Ursuline Sisters in Laredo, Texas, in 1947, and made her vows ion January 8, 1950. She earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree at Incarnate Word College in San Antonio, Texas. Later she went on to earn two Masters Degrees, one in Spanish and one in Theology, the latter at St. Mary’s University. Her education helped her serve in a number of ministries as teacher and/or principal in Laredo, and Galveston, Texas; and principal in Decatur, Illinois. From 1983-1992 she was Director of Hispanic Ministry for the Diocese of Galveston/Houston. After that she continued her Hispanic ministry in Brazoria County, St. Rafael Parish, and Holy Trinity Parish in Angleton, Texas.
She retired to Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in 2012 and then moved to Our Lady of Wisdom Healthcare Center in 2014.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Our Lady of Wisdom Chapel at 5600 General de Gaulle Blvd. in New Orleans, LA on June 2, 2018 at 11:00 am by Reverend Leo Nicoll, S.J. Visitation will begin at 10:00 A.M.
Memorials may be sent to the Ursuline Sisters Retirement Fund. JACOB SCHOEN & SON in charge of the arrangements.
