Shirley Miester

Shirley Mae Groetsch Miester, who loved God, her family and the City of New Orleans, passed away peacefully on Thursday October 21, 2021 at the age of 92 years. A student at St. Mary's Dominican High School and Loyola University of New Orleans, Shirley began her career as a medical technologist working for Isidore Dyer M.D. She eventually met and married the love of her life Julian (Buddy) Miester, and they enjoyed 36 wonderful years together. Shirley grew up in St. Matthias Parish and reigned as Queen of Hermès in 1947. She was a longtime parishioner of St. Pius X in New Orleans and more recently of St. Francis Xavier in Metairie. She served as president of the Children’s Hospital Auxiliary and was an avid golfer and traveler. She was a longtime member of Metairie Country Club. Pre-deceased by her beloved Buddy, her parents James Hubert Groetsch, Sr. and Margaret Gribben Groetsch, siblings Margaret Groetsch Hogan, James Hubert Groetsch, Jr., Joseph William Groetsch, and George Bernard Groetsch. Shirley is survived by her sister-in-law Pat McNamara Groetsch and a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews, who adored her. We will miss her grace, her elegance, her wit and her loving spirit. She will always be a guiding light for us all. Immeasurable gratitude and thanks to Shirley’s devoted care givers including Belkys Conde, Edith Manzur and Michelle Grady.
Relatives and friends of the family are invited a Funeral Mass in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME 3827 Canal St. New Orleans, LA 70119 on Saturday October 30, 2021 at 12:15 PM with visitation beginning at 11: 00 AM. Interment will follow in Lake Lawn Park Cemetery. Due to COVID-19 mandates, masking and social distancing will be observed.
