Ruth Bennett Barriere departed this life on August 2, 2017. Ms. Barriere was approaching her 98th birthday. She was born in Williamstown, Kentucky on December 8, 1919 to Cornelia and JW Bennett. She graduated from the University of Kentucky in 1939. She then moved to Washington DC to become executive assistant to the Honorable Brent Spence , a congressman from northern Kentucky and the Chairman of the Banking and Currency Committee of the United States House of Representatives. In 1949 she met John Barriere , a speech writer for the presidential campaign of Harry S. Truman. They married in 1953. Ms. Barriere retired in 1955 to raise her family but returned to work in 1971 as a special assistant to the Rules Committee of the House of Representatives. She ultimately retired in 1985.
A lifelong democrat Ms. Barriere took pride in voting in every election between 1940 and 2017 and never voting for a Republican.
Ms. Barriere moved to New Orleans in 2013 to spend her final years with her family and reside at Poydras Home where she enjoyed all activities and never missed happy hour.
She was preceded in death by John Barriere her husband of forty five years. She is survived by her son Brent Barriere and his wife, Judy Barrasso of New Orleans ,their two daughters, Jennifer Barriere and her husband Daniel Meyer , of New Orleans Ashley Barriere and her fiancé Robert Harris Golden , of New York City , her daughter Laura Allison Barriere and her husband Arthur Nordlie of Fairfax Virginia and her great granddaughter Josephine Meyer of New Orleans.
Ruth was an extraordinarily kind, loving, and thoughtful woman who will be sorely missed. A memorial service will be held at the home of her son Brent Barriere , 1917 General Pershing Street at 5:00P.M. on Sunday August 6, 2017. All friends and family are welcome.
The family asks that donations be made in her name to either Poydras Home, Planned Parenthood, or Habitat for Humanity .
