Rev. Andrew Kenneth Kolzow, O.P.
Fr. Andrew Kenneth Kolzow was born in Chicago on August 16, 1929 to Harold and Martha Mason Kolzow, the third of six children. Fr. Andy graduated from Downers Grove High School in Downers Grove, IL, then attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, IA, and DePaul University in Chicago, receiving an A.B. in Spanish in 1951. After college, Fr. Andy entered the novitiate for the Dominican Province of St. Albert the Great in Winona, MN, making his first profession on August 31, 1952. Fr. Andy earned a Ph.B. and M.A. in Theology from Aquinas Institute in Dubuque, IA, in 1959. He was ordained to the priesthood at St. Rose Priory in Dubuque on May 24, 1958. From 1959-1975, Fr. Andy served as teacher, Principal, and President of Fenwick High School in Oak Park, IL. In 1975, Fr. Andy left Fenwick to become campus minister at the University of Arizona in Tucson for two years. Then he moved to Dallas where he taught at Bishop Lynch High School from 1977-80. In 1979, Fr. Andy joined the new Dominican Province of St. Martin de Porres. From 1980-83, Fr. Andy served as parochial vicar at St. Joseph Church in San Angelo. From 1983-86, Fr. Andy served as vocation director for the Dominicans in New Orleans and prior of St. Anthony of Padua Priory. Fr. Andy returned to San Angelo as an itinerant preacher from 1987-89. Fr. Andy was elected prior of St. Albert the Great Priory in Irving, TX, in 1989, and served as spiritual director at Holy Trinity Seminary. Fr. Andy returned to preaching in Spanish and English from 1998-2002 and 2004-10 at San Juan Macias Priory, where he also served as prior from 2006-2010. From 2002-2004, Fr. Andy was pastor at St. Ann Church in San Antonio. Fr. Andy returned to St. Albert the Great Priory in Irving in 2010 where he lived until 2020, when he moved to Our Lady of Wisdom Health Care Center. He died at Passages Hospice in New Orleans on December 24, 2020. Fr. Andy was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters Jean, Marilyn, and Patricia, and his brother Glen. He leaves a brother, James Kolzow of Arbor Vitae, WI, along with 19 nieces and nephews, 52 great nieces and nephews, and 43 great great nieces and nephews. Visitation will be 9:00-10:00 AM on Tuesday, January 5, 2021, at St. Anthony of Padua Church in New Orleans, with Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM. Burial will follow at Rosaryville Cemetery in Ponchatoula, LA. Memorials may be made to: Southern Dominican Province, PO Box 8129, New Orleans, LA 70182.
