Many thanks to Dr Welsh for the years of education and for the fact that he treated me as a colleague even when I still had so much to learn. The last few times I saw him at Notre Dame we were trading homemade fruit preserves for his latest red wine selection. He was still interested and enthusiastic about life, and he always seemed to have that look in his eye like he was about to get involved in some kind of mischief. Our last visit about a year ago was interrupted because the bridge competition was about to start - it was great to see that competitive spark still going strong. New Orleans and the Art of Pathology lost a good man.
