September 21, 1921 ~ May 1, 2022 (age 100) 100 Years Old

Tribute

Mildred D’Aubert Crouere, known to her family as “Mum,” passed away peacefully, at the age of 100, on Sunday, May 1, 2022, surrounded by her children. She will be remembered for her devotion to her family and friends, her radiant smile, her kindness and ever-joyous attitude, and her wonderful ability to make everyone in her life feel special.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Joffre J. Crouere, Sr., her parents, Katherine and Watson D’Aubert and her granddaughter, Ashley Denechaud Capra.
She is survived and loved dearly by her six children: Paulette Gamard, Patricia Denechaud, Katherine Lagarde (Jimmy), Jeanne Monsour (Mitch), Suzanne Neal (Steve) and Joffre Crouere, Jr. (Mimi), 20 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. Mildred was the revered matriarch of this large and exceptional family, who will continue to be inspired by her legacy.
Mildred was born in New Orleans, but grew up with her parents in Brusly, Louisiana at the Cinclare sugar cane plantation. At the age of 12, she started boarding at Ursuline Academy in New Orleans and graduated three years later in 1937.
At 15, she entered as a freshman at Louisiana State University, where she joined Alpha Chi Omega Sorority, majoring in Business Administration. At LSU, she met her future husband, Joffre J. Crouere, Sr. After graduating from LSU in 1942, the couple married at Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Orleans.
Mildred worked briefly with the Louisiana Department of Revenue before she and Joffre started raising their large family. Since Joffre served in the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II, the family moved often. After the war, the family settled back home in New Orleans.
She was a devoted and loving daughter, wife, and mother, and was the primary caregiver for her parents, her aunt, and her husband in their later years.
Mildred was a devout Catholic and held leadership positions in several charitable organizations including Ladies of the Madonna and Pro Christo Laborantes. She was also a tireless volunteer giving extraordinary service to the Lighthouse for the Blind, Holy Name of Jesus School, De La Salle High School and Ursuline Academy. For her many achievements, Mildred received the Distinguished Alumna Award from Ursuline Academy in 1999.

She was also an enthusiastic sports fan, always cheering for her favorite teams: LSU (Joffre was a star Tigers baseball player), the Saints, and Notre Dame. She was an active member of the Orleans Club for many decades and belonged to the New Orleans Country Club.
Mildred’s sharp mind and graciousness endured until the end, as did her beautiful, faith-filled spirit. She was truly a blessing and will be greatly missed by her devoted family and friends.
