Michael Stephen Benbow passed away enveloped in the love of his family on April 12, 2021, at the age of 78. Born in Indiana to the late Keith Wesley Benbow and Ruthanne Harber Benbow, Mike was the oldest of ten children. Mike’s cherished role as big brother prepared him for a life dedicated to family. Mike is survived by his adoring wife of 31 years, Sherryl Comeaux Mouton Benbow, and his three loving children, Bryan Benbow (Penny), Cynthia Benbow (Matthew Weakley), and Danica Denny (Mikie) from his first marriage to Jean Westrick Foss, and his stepson, Glynn Mouton (Wendy). Mike leaves behind his proudest accomplishment, his grandchildren- Taylor, Kayleigh, Macy, Madison, Camille, Colin, and Everett. Mike is survived by his beloved siblings- Dawn (Bill), Dennis, Joyce (Bill), Richard (La’Vonda), Paul (Elna), Maricia (Brian), and Jean (Rick), and predeceased by his siblings- Terry and Rita (Dan).
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Purdue University, Mike planted roots in New Orleans and began building his legacy of benevolence and professionalism. Mike was a registered Professional Engineer and Mechanical Engineer in Louisiana and Mississippi, and a Professional Control Systems Engineer in California. Always striving to expand his knowledge, Mike earned his Juris Doctor degree from Loyola University. Mike dedicated much of his time to sharing his professional knowledge and love of science with students through the University of New Orleans, College of Engineering and as a board member and former chairman for the Greater New Orleans Science and Engineering Fair. The University of New Orleans recognized Mike’s invaluable contributions to the community by awarding him an Honorary Doctor of Engineering Degree.
As the eldest in a large family, Mike was a born leader, who was determined to build a company that reflected his personal and professional values. In 1978, Mike founded M S Benbow & Associates (MSB), an engineering firm based in Metairie, LA. Mike dedicated four decades to growing this business and implementing a company culture grounded in genuine personal relationships. Today, MSB has more than 100 employees and offices in Metairie, Mandeville, Houston, and Dallas. Mike was immensely proud of his company’s growth, but more importantly proud of the people who contributed to its success.
Mike firmly believed in the responsibility to share his blessings with others, and he was the most generous with his time and love. Mike was a rock for countless individuals during their time of need, always ready to greet them with his endearing smile and larger than life embrace. Of all his many roles, it was his time as husband, father, and grandfather that Mike cherished above all else. Mike was incredibly proud of his family. He was a constant figure in the lives of his children and grandchildren, present for all of their many accomplishments. Holding his grandchildren when they were young and supporting their passions as they grew filled Mike’s life with incredible joy. Although he will be missed dearly, we will all strive to honor him by continuing his legacy of generosity, love, and family.
