Tribute

Maurice "Moose" Bettencourtt, 85, passed away on Friday, January 29, 2021 from complications of the coronavirus, COVID-19. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 62 years, Jacquelin Candela Bettencourtt. He is also survived by his many nieces, nephews and their families. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleanora and Clement Bettencourtt, his brothers, Albert, Raymond, John, Louis and August Bettencourtt and a sister, Audrey Bettencourtt.
Moose was a native of New Orleans and graduate of Francis T. Nicholls high school. He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving his country while stationed in Schweinfurt, Germany. His years of employment included the United Fruit Company, Criminal Court and the Orleans Parish District Attorney's office as a court stenographer.
A true sports enthusiast, he was involved in many organizations in New Orleans such as the Fun & Frolic Softball League, CAA (Commercial Athletic Association) and the GNOAL ( Greater New Orleans Athletic League) to name a few. He was a true fan of the Fighting Tigers of LSU, often seen wearing his purple and gold, while always listening to his radio.
His favorite greeting to everyone was "where yat?". And what a "yat" he was! A kind and gregarious soul, Moose was a true New Orleans native who loved good food, great music and the celebratory revelry of his native city, especially Mardi Gras and French Quarter Fest, which he never failed to attend. He was a man of strong opinions who also believed in the power of the pen. He tirelessly wrote letters for friends or family members if he thought it could help their situation.
Moose, born with a servant's heart, was a devout Catholic, who served in the Altar Society and as an usher at his parish, Blessed Seelos, in the Bywater. He also volunteered at the Lenten Fish Frys and the St. Joseph Altar.
The family would like to thank the staff of the New Orleans VA Medical Center for their care.
The services will be private at the request of the family. Donations may be made to Blessed Seelos Church, 3037 Dauphine Street, New Orleans, LA 70117 in memory of Maurice "Moose" Bettencourtt.
