Mary Vlahos Kontos, beloved by her community, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 29, 2022, surrounded by her family. Mary was born on February 12, 1936, in Biloxi, Mississippi, to Stratigo and Nicholas Vlahos and graduated from Biloxi High School and Gulf Park College for Women. She moved to New Orleans after marrying Chris Kontos in 1960 and dedicated her life to raising her three children and caring for her family
A gracious hostess and avid cook, Mary loved entertaining. Her treats and dinners were savored by family and friends alike, especially during Christmas. Later in life, she served the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral as its secretary, tending to the administrative duties of the Church she loved. Mary was active in New Orleans’ Greek community, serving in several capacities, including treasurer of the Philoptochos Society and president of the Daughters of Penelope
She is survived by her husband Chris; her children Joanne Kontos Byrne (Kevin Byrne), Katherine Kontos Tadros, and Michael Kontos (Deirdre Ryan); her grandchildren Christopher Byrne, Katie Byrne Brooks (Keagan Brooks), Nicholas Tadros, Alexia Tadros, and Chris Tadros; her siblings Katherine Vlahos Economos (Mike Economos), Demetri Vlahos, Kosta Vlahos (Kally Vlahos), Photine Vlahos Hagicostas (Angelo Hagicostas) and a large and loving extended family.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be offered to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral Archives Fund.
