Tribute

Marvin Wayne Clifford passed away on February 10, 2023 at Ochsner Hospital in the presence of his loving wife Helen Stavros. He was born on May 5, 1947 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He was preceded in death by his parents Wayne Clifford and Verla Salverson and his sister Julie Daley. He is survived by his wife Helen Stavros of New Orleans, his brother Robert Clifford (Mary) of Santa Fe, New Mexico, sisters Jaylene Worrell (Norman) of Dillon, Montana and Ann Marie Jenson (Chris) of Blackfoot, Idaho. He also had 3 step siblings, Brant Howell, Richelle Howell, and Denise Howell who mattered a great deal to him. He had sixteen nieces and nephews scattered around the west and northwest. He graduated in 1969 from Brigham Young University and then received his Master’s Degree in Social Work from Portland State University in 1971. He lived in Portland, Oregon until 1985 and maintained a close connection to his friends there after moving to New Orleans. He was planning to retire to Oregon with his wife this summer. He came to Tulane School of Social Work for their doctoral program in social work which he completed in 1988. He remained in New Orleans until his death although he never loved New Orleans the way he did the Pacific Northwest. He was a member of the Psychiatry Department at Ochsner Health from 1990 until his death. He was known for his therapy groups for children, adolescents, and adults. He was active in numerous professional organizations and frequently gave talks on various topics related to therapy. He also loved teaching others about social work and supervised many graduate student social workers over the years. He taught for 30 years as an adjunct professor at the Tulane School of Social Work and in their online program over the past several years. He also taught for 2 years at the LSU School of Social Work and taught in the graduate counseling program at Our Lady of Holy Cross. He loved travel particularly to Oregon and the Northwest. All those touched by Dr. Clifford’s kindness, teaching, and help are invited to attend services at Jacob Schoen Funeral Home, 3827 Canal St., New Orleans, LA 70119, on Saturday February 25, 2023. Visitation will begin at 10 am with a service at noon.
