Welcome to the memorial page for

Joy Scheuering Rojas

May 31, 1935 ~ October 15, 2017 (age 82) 82 Years Old
Joy Scheuering Rojas transitioned peacefully into spirit Sunday morning at East Jefferson General Hospital surrounded by her dearest treasures. Born in New Orleans on May 31 in an undisclosed year to the late Superintendent of Police Joseph L. Scheuering and the late Edna Juengel Scheuering. Joy was a devoted mother, a dedicated Catholic, and a fun-loving New Orleanian.

Joy was a founding member of St. Benilde Parish and served in many capacities to the benefit of the school, the church, and the parishioners. She was den mother of Cub Scouts Pack 227; spearheaded, grew, and managed the Adoration Chapel from its inception; was president of the Altar Society; and served as an extraordinary minister. In 2011 she received the Order of St. Louis IX Medallion for her great dedication and years of service to the Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Joy was an inspired local ambassador for New Orleans culture and history. In her physical youth, she was Queen of the Krewe of Carrollton & Queen of the Mystic Krewe of Alpheus. In her seemingly limitless vigor of spirit, she was a walking example of the joie de vivre and hospitality of the Big Easy. While volunteering with the New Orleans Metropolitan Convention & Visitors Bureau, she would often confound visitors with her “cosmopolitan” accent and was always ready with useful information to make the city’s guests feel at home. This was merely a reflection of the way she treated anyone who came into her life. Such was her love for the city and expressing hospitality that she studied to act as an official tour guide. She loved to travel, to share her culture, and to celebrate events with her family and friends who quickly were made to feel like family.

Joy is preceded in death by her parents, by her aunt & uncle Violet Juengel Burns & Frank Burns, and by her grandmother Alizia Patureau Juengel. She is survived by her beloved husband of 60 years, George; her children Stephen (Rory Centanni), Jeffrey, Karen (Jeff) Terry, and David (Mike Burns); her grandchildren Francis Rojas, Jeffrey Rojas, Joshua Terry, and Joel Terry. She is also survived by two dear sisters-in-law JoeAnn Feigler and Mona Rojas, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and long-time friends.

Visitation will be held at St. Benilde Church on Thursday October 19, 2017 beginning at 9:30am. This will be followed by a remembrance at 12:15 and a funeral mass at 12:30. Interment will follow at Lake Lawn Park Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Joy’s name may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation (230 East Ohio Street, Suite 500, Chicago, IL 60611; http://bit.ly/Joy-PFF) or to St. Benilde Church (1901 Division Street, Metairie, LA 70001; https://stbenilde.org/e-giving).
