October 10, 1963 ~ January 26, 2019 (age 55) 55 Years Old

Tribute

John Andrew Mierl passed away on January 26th, 2019 at the age of 55. He had battled heart disease for the past decade.  Born October 10, 1963 in New Orleans, he was preceded in death by his parents Russell August Mierl and Catherine Walsh Mierl.  Also preceding him in death was his sister Edith Mierl Casey (Tom).  He is survived by sisters Jane Mierl Turner (Jimmy), Miriam Mierl Wismar (Keith) and brothers Daniel David Mierl and Darryl Norman Mierl (Mary).  He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews whom he loved plus his precious dog, Iris aka “Weasel”.   John graduated from NOCCA High School, attended Southeastern Louisiana University and Berklee Conservatory.  John worked in the gaming industry in interesting and choice locations: Las Vegas, New Zealand, Milwaukee, Biloxi and eventually back in New Orleans where he was Director of Gaming for the Crescent City School of Gaming.  John enjoyed the role of educator and was very proud of the students that he successfully placed in the industry.  He was particularly proud that the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival had sought him out in 2017 to conduct symposiums on the history of the game of Craps in relation to New Orleans. In recent years, John had taken on the role of a gaming impresario by organizing his better students for private dealing functions like birthday parties, corporate functions, grand openings, holiday parties and bar mitzvahs.  A true New Orleanian, he was an avid Saints fan and a real bohemian raconteur with the best of them, always an entertaining fellow.  His gentle and affable personality made him welcome in a very wide circle of friends who will miss him dearly. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial service at 12:00 pm on Saturday, February 2, 2019 at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 2624 Burgundy Street, New Orleans, LA. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until the time of the service. Interment will be in St. Vincent de Paul Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please consider making donations in his honor to the St. Paul Lutheran Church in the Marigny Restoration Fund. JACOB SCHOEN & SON in charge of the arrangements.
