Joan Meyers, a resident of New Orleans, LA and former Sister of Mount Carmel, passed away at the age of 87 on January 17, 2019 at Lafon Nursing Home. Joan was born on January 14, 1932 to Wilfred Joseph Meyers of Abbeville, LA and Odette Marie Lamothe of New Orleans, LA. She was a Sister of Mount Carmel from 1950-1972. Before her entrance into Carmel she was a member of the Sodality, the Catholic Students Mission Crusade (C.S.M.C.) and a Carmelite Tertiary. Joan graduated from Mount Carmel Academy in New Orleans in 1950. She attended Mount Carmel Normal at the Motherhouse and received her master’s degree in Education from Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA. While in Carmel, Joan devoted 20 years teaching at schools in the Paincourtville, Abbeville and Rayne, LA. She also taught at St. Dominic and St. James Major in New Orleans. After leaving Carmel, she taught at Livingston Middle School and served as substitute teacher in New Orleans and Jefferson Parish Schools. After retiring from teaching she worked at Bellsouth Telephone Company as an Administrative Assistant then in the Development Office of the Jesuits and as a volunteer in the Development Office of the Sisters of Mount Carmel. Although Joan left the congregation in 1972, she never left her Carmelite Spirituality. She continued to attend daily Mass, Liturgy of the Hours, and daily meditation. She remained a daughter of Carmel. Joan was the second of two children and was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sister, Sister Frances Therese Meyers, O. Carm. and cousins. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in New Orleans at in the Gerard Schoen Chapel of JACOB SCHOEN & SON, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA on Wednesday, January 23, 2019 at 11:00 am. Visitation will be from 9:00 am until the time of the Mass. Joan will be interred in St. Louis No. 3 Cemetery, 3421 Esplanade Avenue, New Orleans, LA.
