Janet Irene Morris Johnson Mackenzie

April 8, 1935 ~ November 27, 2023 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Janet Irene Morris Johnson Mackenzie, 88, of New Orleans, passed away on November 27, 2023 at her longtime residence in the Carrollton section of New Orleans.

Janet, a beloved wife and mother, was born in New Orleans to Calvin Morris Johnson and Alice Dorothy Goll Johnson on April 8, 1935.  As a young child, she lived with her family in Buras, Louisiana, before moving to New Orleans.  She graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1954 and Southern Methodist University in 1958. While attending S.M.U., Janet was a member of the Delta Gamma Sorority. After graduating from college, she went on a European tour that provided lasting memories.

While living in the French Quarter, Janet was courted by Michael Griswold Mackenzie. The two exchanged marital vows on February 27, 1966 in New Orleans at the Royal Orleans Hotel. During Janet’s lifetime, she was employed as a social worker, volunteered at her daughter’s school, was an avid reader, enjoyed painting, and was a lifetime lover of the feline population.

Janet is preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, John Calvin Johnson and Rosaltha Moore Johnson; her maternal grandparents, William Bismarck Goll and Ella Marie Asbury Goll; her parents; her older sister, Eleanor Rose Johnson; and a younger sister, Mary Morris Johnson. Janet is a descendant of the Goll and Asbury families, both of whom have long standing histories in New Orleans. The Goll Family came to this City in 1852 from Germany. Circa 1820, the Asbury Family traveled down from New York to make New Orleans their home.

Janet is survived by her husband, Michael Griswold Mackenzie, who was privileged to have had a wonderful wife.  Janet is also survived by her daughter, Eilean Donan Mackenzie of New Orleans; her sister, Julia Ann Johnson White (spouse - Peter Christopher White, Sr.) of Atlanta; her brother, Calvin Morris Johnson, Jr. (spouse - Mary Jo Endres Johnson) of New Orleans; and her two grandsons, Harrison Michael Steiner and Max Karel Steiner of Orlando.

Janet was a strong believer in the compassionate endeavors of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA). Donations are welcome to that organization in her name.

The family of Janet wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Karen Uzzetta and Tamira Brown of Nola Home Care.

Burial will be at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery. Arrangements are by Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home. Services will be determined at a later date.
