James Sutterfield

August 6, 1942 ~ November 9, 2018 (age 76) 76 Years Old

Tribute

James “Jim” Sutterfield, Attorney and Honorary Consul to St. Vincent and the Grenadines, 76
James R. “Jim” Sutterfield, Sr., 76, of New Orleans, Louisiana, passed out of this earthly realm Friday, November 9, 2018 at Touro Infirmary.
Jim is survived by his wife Teri of 34 years, son James R. Sutterfield, Jr and his wife Lisa, and daughter Dana C. Sutterfield. He was preceded in death by his loving parents, James D. and Alba Sutterfield, to whom he was born on August 6, 1942 in Houston, TX. Jim was a loving son, husband, father and stalwart friend to an uncountable number in this city and throughout the world. He will be sorely missed.
Mr. Sutterfield was possessed of a piercing intellect, one that lead him to lifelong success as a University of Texas undergraduate (1962), Loyola University of New Orleans College of Law (1967) and Master of Laws, with distinction, from Tulane University Law School in 1981. He was elected to the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1970-1972 to serve a mid-term vacancy, becoming the first Republican to be elected to public office from New Orleans since Reconstruction. He served as a charter member of The Harmonie Group, an international network of defense attorneys, founded in 1992, and served on the Board of Directors as well as President. He was a founding partner of Sutterfield & Webb, LLC in December 1997. Since January 1997, Mr. Sutterfield served as honorary consul general of St. Vincent and the Grenadines for the states of Louisiana, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Kentucky and Tennessee. In 2015 he became Dean of the Louisiana Consular Corps.
Mr. Sutterfield was admitted to practice in the state courts of Louisiana, the federal district courts for the eastern, middle and western districts of Louisiana, the federal district courts for the eastern and southern districts of Texas, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit and the Supreme Court of Texas.
Active in professional organizations, Mr. Sutterfield was a member of the District of Columbia Bar, the Louisiana State Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, the American Bar Association, the Maritime Law Association of the United States and the International Association of Defense Counsel.  He was a Fellow of the American College of Coverage and Extracontractual Counsel.
Throughout his career, Mr. Sutterfield published articles for legal journals and professional publications on maritime law, insurance and other topics. He also served as an expert witness in many cases. Mr. Sutterfield was a member of Southern Yacht Club and Bienville Club
If not called to be a lawyer, Jim would’ve made a fine fisherman as he caught them all, large and small. Or a sailor, having served as expert crewman on many a racing vessel in the Atlantic, Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. Or a gourmet chef, yes, what a mark he would have made in that realm! In his home kitchen, known as “Chez Jim” to those in the know, Jim’s talents would surely have forced Michelin to add a 4th Star to their rankings. And so, we say adieu, to our bon vivant, our renaissance man, our mentor and dearest friend.
