James Birts

James Russell (Jamey) Birts, of Metairie, Louisiana, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, May 28, 2021, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 65 years old. Jamey was predeceased by his beloved companion, Linda Daly, and his parents Betty and Milo Birts. He will be deeply missed by the many friends he made throughout his life, and Linda’s family who consider him one of their own.

A native of El Paso, Jamey traveled the country and lived in many places, including Albuquerque NM and Evans CO, before settling in New Orleans. He was immensely proud of the fact that he stayed in the city during Katrina and assisted with the rebuilding of his neighborhood.

Jamey received earned a BA from The George Washington University and completed work on a master’s degree in British Literature at the University of Northern Colorado. He worked in a variety of careers, including English teacher, historical archaeologist, restauranteur, and historic property renovator. A life-long learner, Jamey had a wide variety of interests and was always embarking on new adventures. He lived his life to the fullest up until the day he died.

In lieu of a funeral, Jamey wanted his friends to raise a glass in his honor and share their fond memories of him.
