He was a graduate of Warren Easton High School and, following his service in the United States Navy from 1946 to 1948, graduated in 1953 from Tulane University, College of Arts and Sciences, Geological Sciences. He was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church and was a faithful member of Our Savior Lutheran Church. He was an avid reader of war histories, enjoyed his occasional evening Scotch, and loved listening to his family marvel at his sharp recall of dates and events, even at the age of 95. Next to his family devotion, his former longtime pleasure was square dancing as a member and officer of Gold Dust Twirlers, Bar-None Saddle-ites, and Dixie Chain Square Dance Clubs. He also served as President and Past-President of the Metropolitan New Orleans Area Square and Round Dance Association.
The family wishes to express its heartfelt gratitude for the excellent care and attention provided to Mr. Ackermann by the entire staff of Dunbar Village; especially, his therapist and friend, Pam Williams, who personifies the words, “Let there be kindness in your face, in your eyes, in your smile, in the warmth of your greeting . . . do not only give your care, but give your heart as well.” Special thanks also to the staff of Kare-in-Home for providing Mr. Ackermann with comfort care in his final journey home.
