Gunther Richard Michaelis, known to many as “Red”, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021, from complications of Parkinson’s Disease, a few days before his 87th birthday. He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Hans and Helene Klara Michaelis. He is survived by his wife, Joan Pilliod Michaelis, his sister, Dolores M. Autenrieth (the late Edwin) of New Jersey, five children, Gunther Richard Michaelis, Jr. (Nancy) of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Laura Michaelis Vickery (E. Benton, III), Michael Francis Michaelis (Christine) of Alexandria, Virginia, Celeste Michaelis Mikes (Steven), Adele Michaelis Ralston (Graham), and twelve grandchildren, Gunther Richard “Trey” Michaelis, III (Caitlin), Christopher Adam Michaelis, Alison Marie Mikes, Madison Colleen Mikes, Matthew Eric Michaelis, Kelemen Joseph Mikes, Laura Elise Vickery, Ashley Anne Michaelis, Michael Francis Michaelis, Jr., Riley Helyn Ralston, Graham Mears Ralston, Jr., and Emma Adele Ralston. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Red was born in New Jersey and came to New Orleans to study at Tulane University where he met his wife, Joan. He fell in love with her and the city and never left except for service in the U.S. Army where he earned the rank of Captain. At Tulane he graduated with a B.S. in chemistry and continued at Tulane to earn his law degree. He was a member of the New Orleans Bar Association, the Louisiana Bar Association, and the National Association of Bond Lawyers. He was a member of the Bienville Club, several carnival organizations, and a former member of the New Orleans Lawn Tennis Club.
Family and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass at 12:15 P.M. on Friday, November 12, 2021, at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Greenwood Cemetery.
