Grace Benson

Grace Ramsay Benson of Algiers, LA, died on August 21, 2021 at the age of 89. She was preceded in death by: her parents, Captain Preston Stanley Ramsay and Grace E. Staunton Ramsey. She is survived by: her daughter, Grace Marie Benson of New Orleans, LA; her son David Wayne Benson of New Orleans, LA; her daughter Kathryn Benson Fitzpatrick (Billy) of Metairie, LA; her three grandchildren, William E. Fitzpatrick, Sean P. Fitzpatrick, and Neal S. Fitzpatrick. Grace was born in New Orleans on September 17, 1931, the only child of Preston and Grace. Grace was a graduate of Louise S McGehee School, she received her undergraduate degree from Newcomb College, and a Master’s Degree from Loyola University. Grace was a retired teacher who worked for the New Orleans Public School System for 38 years. She was also a familiar face to library patrons. Grace was a librarian for 47 years at Algiers Regional Library. Grace received the Staff of the Year Award from the Friends of the New Orleans Public Library. Her fellow librarians frequently said, “Where most librarians are more reserved, Grace was always a true joy and pleasure to work with. She makes the sun shine on a rainy day.” “She is funny and always in a good mood. She is also very organized, hard-working and an inspiration to the whole staff. Her wish was to be carried out with the card catalog. The family wishes to thank and acknowledge the mother/daughter team of Mrs. Joyce Harrison and Mrs. Joycelyn Leonard who selflessly took care of Grace the last three years of her life.
Family and friends are invited to a Funeral Service on Friday, August 27, 2021 at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 3643 Aurora Drive, New Orleans, LA 70131. Visitation will begin at 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at church. The service will begin at 11:00 a.m. Family and friends are welcome to attend the Interment. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, 3643 Aurora Drive, New Orleans, LA 70131. COVID-19 mask-wearing protocols and social distancing will be observed.
