On March 7, 2018, Esther Marie Scherf Lehnhardt passed away in Houston, TX just shy of her 100th birthday. She was born May 31, 1918 in San Diego, CA, to the late Rev. Paul and Adele Eylert Scherf. Her family moved to France and Germany during her childhood years prior to settling in New Orleans, LA (1929).
In 1946 she married Rev. Marvin H. Lehnhardt and supported him in his ministry at Lutheran churches in Texas and New Orleans. She resided in New Orleans for 45 years before moving to Houston, TX after Hurricane Katrina. Faith and family were most important to her, and gave her continued strength and joy throughout her life. She is remembered as a caring, strong-willed and spunky lady who was loved by many. She was preceded in death by her husband and her siblings; Ruth Wadsworth, Margaret Zibilich and John Scherf. She is survived by her three children, Edward M. Lehnhardt, Lynn Lehnhardt Moers, and Stephen P. Lehnhardt, six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held March 17, 2018 at Schoen Funeral home, 3827 Canal St. New Orleans, LA 77019 with visitation from 9:30-10:30 am. Funeral Service to follow at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, 315 Ridgelake Dr. Metarie, LA 70001 at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Building Fund.
