Daniel Clayton DeMers, aged 99 passed on Friday August 12, 2016. Dan was the beloved husband of Tareize (Rose) Kefaya DeMers and cherished uncle of Julie Simmons, James Maher, Joseph Maher, Anne DeBlanc, David DeMers, Patricia Green, Susan DeMers, and the late Debbie DeMers. Mr. DeMers was born February 18, 1917 in Hudson Falls, New York. He received his degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Rochester in New York. During World War II, Dan served for 4 years in U.S Army and was discharged with honor. Following the war, Dan entered the Trappist monastery in Spencer, Massachusetts. He was ordained a priest and in 1975 served the Diocese of St. Louis in Missouri and then the Diocese of New Orleans. After he left the priesthood, Dan married Tareize (Rose) Kefaya in 1979. Dan was an integral part of the non-geographical Roman Catholic parish, the Community of John the Evangelist. Dan was also the first coordinator of Contemplative Outreach in New Orleans. Following his retirement from the Louisiana Department of Labor in 1986, where he had worked as a job placement counselor, Dan and his wife Rose operated a day care center on the west bank for thirteen years. Funeral Mass will be Saturday August 20 at 10 AM at Holy Spirit Church, 6201 Stratford Place, New Orleans, La. Visitation will precede the service on Saturday at 9:30 AM.
