Chef Goffredo Fraccaro

December 17, 1925 ~ January 11, 2022 (age 96) 96 Years Old

Tribute

Goffredo Fraccaro, known to everyone as "Chef", passed away peacefully at Ochsner Health Center in Kenner on Tuesday, January 11, 2022 at Noon. He is preceded in death by his wife of 69 years, Maria Goffredo and granddaughter Donna Jagot. He is survived by his daughter Maura Fraccaro and grandson Michael Jagot. Born in 1925, he is the son of Genoa mother, Amalia Maria Vallini and his Swiss/German father (unknown) Fraccaro. At 15, he was assigned by his mother to be the cook of the family. At 17, he was drafted into the Italian Navy as a cook. One year later the Germans took over the Italian Navy. Because he spoke both Italian and German, he was elevated in the kitchen ranks to Chef. After the war he worked on cruise ships and arrived in Baton Rouge in 1961. He immediately got a job at the Little Village Restaurant on Airline Highway. In 1969 Goffredo moved to New Orleans. He opened his first restaurant in 1972, Il Ristorante Trefontane in the French Quarter. In 1979 he started another restaurant, La Riviera. Famous for it's crabmeat ravioli, veal picatta and calamari, the restaurant stayed open until Katrina in 2005. Goffredo also co-founded the St. Michael's Chef's Charity event which is still in existence today. He was knighted by the Italian Government, had his own tv show on WYES and made numerous appearances, always with a quick wit and passion for cooking, which matched his passion for life. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at 12:15 PM on Saturday, January 22, 2022 in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM. Interment will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
