Tribute

Carolyn “Tay” Sarrat D’Amour passed away on December 29, 2018. Daughter of Lucille Pilié Sarrat and Walter Sarrat, Carolyn is married to Dr. Gene D’Amour and is the first-born of her six siblings: Walter Lewis Sarrat, Ronald Sarrat (deceased), Janice Martino, Larry Sarrat (deceased) and Susanne Hepburn. Tay died in her home surrounded by her husband and her three children, Lisa, Chris and Todd D’Amour, who helped minister to her during the four years she battled cancer. Gene and Tay met after college when they joined a volunteer organization called “Catholic Lay Extension.” They spent 1½ years in Oklahoma living and working with poor, underprivileged families and were actively involved in the civil rights movement. They married and moved to Minneapolis, MN, then to Morgantown, WV and to Washington, DC as Gene pursued graduate school and then work. In 1980, they moved back to Tay’s beloved New Orleans, her birthplace, where Gene worked first at Tulane and then Xavier University where he is still employed. Gene and Tay were married for 52 years. Besides her siblings, and two uncles, Tay is survived by her grandchildren Landen and Jolie D’Amour, who were among the greatest joys of her life. Tay taught school for over 25 years at St. Angela Merici, St. Rita’s in Harahan and finally at De La Salle High School, which she considered her second home. Tay’s funeral will be on Saturday, January 5, 2019 at noon on the Xavier campus in the St. Katherine Drexel Chapel on Pine Street. Visitation will begin at 10:00 am. In order to assist the Christian Brothers in their mission, in lieu of flowers, please make donations to De La Salle High School. Live Jesus in our hearts! JACOB SCHOEN & SON in charge of the arrangements.
