Carmela (Tootsie) Talamo Gros

May 29, 1937 ~ July 17, 2021 (age 84) 84 Years Old

Tribute

Gros, Carmela Talamo (Tootsie)
Carmela Gros, known as Tootsie, went to dwell in the House of the Lord on Saturday, July 17, 2021 after a long illness.
She was born on May 29, 1937 to the late Anthony Talamo Sr. and the late Lillian Duncan Talamo.  She was the loving wife of the late Edward M. Gros, Sr. She was also preceded in death by her three siblings, Joseph Talamo of Napa CA (Rita), Lillie Lataxes (Rudy) and Anthony Talamo, Jr. (Marie).
Tootsie was the beloved mother of Debra G. Zimmer (Keith), Donna G. Anderson (David), and was also preceded in death by two children, Edward M. Gros, Jr. and Virginia M. Gros.
Tootsie was a devoted grandmother to Kellie C. Zimmer, Edward M. Gros, III and Courtney L. Anderson (Sara), and great-grandmother to Carter Scott Anderson. She will be greatly missed by her canine baby, Daisy Too.
She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews whom she loved like her own children. As one of her nephews put it, “Aunt Tootsie was the glue that held the family together.”
She loved working as a baker for the Archdiocese of New Orleans at Immaculate Heart of Mary School and Resurrection of Our Lord School where she baked the best homemade rolls and desserts. While there, she also baked for students at Prince of Peace Lutheran School and St. Simon Peter School.
Tootsie loved cooking, and to her, food was love. She was happiest cooking large meals, especially Italian food, for her family and anyone who happened to stop by around dinner time on Sunday.  No one left hungry or without a plate of leftovers. Holidays were always filled with an abundance of homemade food and Tootsie’s love.
In 1999, while volunteering at St. Simon Peter Church in New Orleans East, Tootsie was given the Order of St. Louis Award for her service to the Catholic Church.
She will be remembered for her loving spirit, strong will, quick wit, faith in God’s grace, and love of chocolate. She had a loving heart and giving spirit. She kept her fond memories of family and friends alive through her many stories. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.
A funeral will be held on Saturday, July 24 at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home located at 3827 Canal Street in New Orleans, LA. Family and friends are invited to attend from 10:00 AM until 12 noon.  A mass of Christian burial will be held at noon. Internment will be at St. Bernard Memorial Gardens, 701 Virtue Street, Chalmette, LA.
