Tribute

Camillo Bruce Averna (CB) age 69 entered into eternity. A resident of Unity Nursing Home on Delechaise Street for the last ten years died on November 23, 2018.  Born May 6, 1949 in Mobile Alabama,   he is preceded in death by his parents Jerome Averna and Gertrude Stanbarger Averna. He is the grandson of the late Camillo Averna a chef at Antoine’s Restaurant in 1930’s and 40’s. Each year on his birthday he would dine at Antoine’s to celebrate with his cousin Mark Lescale. He is survived by cousins, Lillian Lescale (Melvin), Roy Averna (Doris), Elaine Jones (Will), Perry Degioanni (Donna), Paul Degioanni (Charlene), and the late Camille Degioanni, also, Lana Averna Baack, Conrad Averna, and Nathalie Averna. Also survived by numerous 2nd cousins, Leslie, Mark, Keith, Lauren, Sharon, Gary, Craig, Stephen, Darren, and Chris. Mr. Averna was a long time resident of Metairie. He loved New Orleans Mardi Gras, Hallmark Christmas ornaments, and food. CB would be front and center on St Charles Avenue for Mardi Gras and before that on Veterans Memorial in Metairie with the local fire department firemen. He was in awe of the service and dedication of all firefighters. He had a great memory for details for example the location and firehouse numbers for every fire station in New Orleans and Metairie. One trip to New York after 9/11 he made it a point to visit one of the houses that lost 11 men. He wanted to personally thank them and let them know we would never forget. He was an avid reader of the local newspapers. He would stay current with new chefs and the awards they received for cooking. His memory for details of cruise ships size, ports, and capacity for passengers was another love. He had a knowledge for railway lines and who owned what tracks as we crossed them and each and every artist of the sculptures in the sculpture garden at City Park. He volunteered for the Sculpture garden at City Park, Ochsner Hospital, and most recently Touro Infirmary. Many thanks to the caregivers at Unity Nursing home, his Dialysis Unit on Jena Street and the doctors and nurses at Touro and CuraHealth center. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Funeral Mass in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son Funeral Home, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119 on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin at 9:30 am.
