Dr Calvin Drew Sanders

Calvin Drew Sanders, M.D. passed away in his home peacefully on Saturday, May 1, 2021. Drew was better known by his friends, staff, colleagues and students as Dr. Drew Sanders of New Orleans, Louisiana. On January 27, 1936, Drew entered this world bringing many blessings to Calvin and Elizabeth Sanders. Drew lived his impressionable years in Georgetown, Texas where he graduated from Georgetown High School in 1954. His academic career continued at Southwestern University in Georgetown where he received his bachelor’s degree in 1958 and at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, Texas, graduating in 1962. Drew immediately joined the US Public Health Service where he completed his ophthalmology degree and residency. His work took him from New Orleans to Galveston, to Staten Island, back to New Orleans and his final assignment in Anchorage, Alaska to complete his 20 year career in Public Service. In 1982, Dr. Sanders began his second career in teaching, guiding and supervising ophthalmology residents as they rotated through Houma, Louisiana. Later, when Ochsner and LSU merged programs, Dr. Sanders continued teaching until his retirement. Dr. Sanders always had a great love for art, jazz and opera, as well as traveling around the world. He loved entertaining guests. He was a gracious host who showed them the best of New Orleans. Dr. Sanders leaves a legacy of ophthalmologists who will carry on his love of caring for people. He considered them his students, as well as good friends. Other wonderful people of importance to Dr. Sanders are: Jocy Whiteaker who took great care of him for 30 plus years. The great staff of his condo who went above and beyond their duties to care for him, including Robert, his private bartender. And last, but not least, Dr. Sanders’ many friends who he truly loved. Thank you all for being such a special part of his wonderful life. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Service at 1:30 PM on Saturday, May 22, 2021 in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of Jacob Schoen & Son, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA 70119. Visitation will begin at 12:30 PM. Reception to follow after the service in the Iberville Room of Jacob Schoen & Son.
