Albert John Lauro

Dr. Albert John Lauro, Sr., entered into eternal peace on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at East Jefferson General Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on December 11, 1927, in New Orleans, to Santolo Lauro, a native of Ischia, Italy and Annunciata Rosalie Parisi, a native of Naples, Italy. Dr. Lauro was preceded in death by his parents and brothers and sisters: Raffaela Lauro Mason, Antonio Lauro, Frank Lauro, Sr., Angelo Santolo Lauro, Sr., Elena Lauro Iseman, and Rudolfo Lauro. He is survived by his son Albert John Lauro, Jr., his granddaughter Somer Thompson, grandson Albert John Lauro, III, and longtime friend of many years, Donald Beason. He also leaves behind a sister-in-law, Yvonne Lauro as well as ten nieces and nephews. He was a graduate of St Aloysious High School in 1944. He was drafted in 1945 into the US Army at the end of World War II and stationed in Japan. Albert then followed his dream and entered into LSU medical school. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine in 1954. He was a highly successful private practitioner as St. Charles General Hospital. He always loved teaching and joined the LSU medical school faculty and Charity Hospital’s staff. While working in trauma, he recognized a need for specialized emergency physicians. Thus, Dr. Lauro, became the founder of the LSU Emergency Medicine Residency program which has been in existence since 1972. At the same time, he was one of the founders, nationally, of the specialty of Emergency Medicine, first through work with the American College of Emergency Medicine, then with the American Board of Emergency Medicine. He is fondly remembered by the long lineage of Board Certified Emergency Medicine Physicians whom he trained. He is also remembered as a kind and compassionate physician and in his honor a standing professorship in Emergency Medicine at LSU was named after him. Every year the Dr. Albert Lauro Award goes out to an outstanding graduating emergency medicine resident from the program he established. A physician, first and foremost, Dr. Lauro has earned a place in the history of emergency medicine in America.
Relatives and friends of the family also LSU medical staff and alumni, and the Brothers of the Sacred Heart are invited to attend the Funeral Mass on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel of JACOB SCHOEN & SON, 3827 Canal Street at 11:00 AM. Friends may visit after 9:30 AM. Interment will be in St. Louis #3 Cemetery.
