Born and raised in New Orleans Jim served in the US Navy aboard the aircraft carrier Independence. After his time serving our country he met his beloved wife Carol. They shared 59 years of love and raised their family together.
As a man of faith, he was a devoted parishioner of St. Louis King of France for nearly 55 years. Jim often volunteered there, from assisting with displaying the manger at Christmas, helping with building repairs, Lector, Eucharistic Minister, to Bingo Chairman. He made lifelong friends as a member of the St. Louis King of France Men’s Club and led countless young parishioners as a youth leader.
Jim opened Hernandez Construction as a dedicated and skilled General Contractor. For 50 years he served his community and family with his true passion for construction; leaving behind a legacy of craftsmanship which will be remembered and celebrated for years to come. He loved working with his hands and put his heart and soul into everything he touched. With his unwavering dedication, impeccable work ethic, and commitment to quality, Jim earned the respect and admiration of those who knew him. His remarkable ability to turn raw materials and ideas into functional spaces was matched only by his kindness and willingness to teach and mentor the next generation of craftsmen. Throughout his life he worked on numerous construction projects for his beloved friends, family, and clients, always leaving a mark of excellence.
Jim did not only construct buildings but communities, fostering a sense of camaraderie among those he called his friends and colleagues. Whether a friend needed assistance with replacing a rudder on a sailboat or reworking brakes on a car, he was happy to help arriving with tools in hand. Jim was always there when you needed him. He opened his home to all those who were ready for a good time hosting countless parties, crawfish boils, and pool days. The Hernandez home was always a lively place to be full of music and laughter due to the warm spirit of Jim. He spent his free time attending plays and sporting events for his grandchildren which brought him immense joy. Jim was their biggest fan, insisting on a front row seat at every event! He will always be remembered for his warm singing voice, contagious dancing, and smooth whistling. Jim lived his life with joy and regarded his skills as a gift from God sharing them with anyone in need. He will be missed, but always lovingly remembered. A special thanks to his caregivers:
Ginny Wilson, Aliki Swatt, and Star and Anthony with Passages Hospice.
