Martha Lopez Recio left this life peacefully on December 27, 2017 in New Orleans, Louisiana with family by her side; at the age of “Don’t you dare say my age”.
Martha is survived by her children, Marta Recio Martin (Jeannine), Robert Recio, and Henry Recio; her grandchildren, Julie Martin Wilcox (Russell), Holly Christine Martin (Yordan), David Brian Martin (May), and Dylan Yancy; as well as her great-grandchildren, Isabella, Angelina, Gibson, Beau, Sabrina, Lucas, and Vivian and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her husband, of 67 years, Enrique Roberto (Papi) Recio, her sisters, Mercedes (Chea) Bascuas, Sylvia Perez, Olga (Nene) Ferrer, and her beloved twin sister Mirta Ferrer.
Martha was born on December 14, 1924 in Havana, Cuba to Jesus Lopez and Mercedes (Cheche) Ventura Lopez. Martha immigrated to the US in 1961 from Cuba with her husband and children to join family members in New Orleans to escape communism that overtook her country. After settling in New Orleans, Martha was an Executive Secretary for the Port of New Orleans where she worked for over 25 years. She was a highly valued employee for her organizational skills, being bi-lingual, and impeccable attention to detail. After retiring, she enjoyed many years with her high school sweetheart and husband, Roberto, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren.
The joy of Martha’s life were her children and grandchildren. Known to many as “Abuela and Papi”, Martha and Roberto were dedicated grandparents that gave up their weekends to care for and spend time with their grandchildren. Together they provided delicious food, lots of goodies, trips to the park and the mall, and so much unconditional love. They played a role in raising their oldest great granddaughter, Isabella, along with enjoying many fun visits with all of the great grandchildren. Martha took great care in her appearance and felt immense pride in all that she did.
Funeral services in celebration of Martha’s life will be held Tuesday, January 2, 2018, 11am visitation and 1:30 pm Mass at JACOB SCHOEN & SON, Canal St. All are welcome to attend. The family would like to thank all of the staff at St. Margaret’s at Mercy for their care and dedication in the last months, especially Roshine who was very loving in Martha’s care.
