ELEONORA JOSEPHINE BARBIER VOGT
1925-2017


No one who ever met Eleonora Vogt could forget her. She loved her family and friends and made a lasting impression on everyone she knew. Eleonora was known as Nan to her nieces and nephews.
A native of New Orleans, Eleonora Barbier Vogt was born on June 6, 1925. She left this world at age 92 on July 26, 2017 in Lafayette, Louisiana, surrounded by her sister Dorothy and niece Jonelle.
Mrs. Vogt grew up in New Orleans and shared her love of the city for its culture and celebrations. A 1941 graduate of Edward Douglas White High School and Soule Business College in 1942, she worked for 50 years with various companies, as well as city, state, and federal government agencies. She retired three times, first in 1973 as Office Manager of Advance Paper Company, Inc., then in 1985 as Executive Secretary of the Southern Paper Trade Association and the Southerners, Inc., and finally as a New Orleans tour guide in 1992. Eleonora excelled as a tour guide and relished in describing all the wonderful historical intricacies of the Crescent City. In 1973 she moved to Pascagoula, Mississippi when her husband Al was transferred with the Woolco Department Stores, and she moved back to New Orleans in 1985. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, she moved to Lafayette, Louisiana where she joined the Red Rover Chapter of the Red Hat Society, the Ex-Orleanians, and a life-writing group. She also joined a weekly ladies bridge group. Her last residence was at Courtyard Retirement & Assisted Living in Lafayette. While living in Pascagoula in 1974, Eleonora was co-chair for the Centennial Celebration of the United Slavonian Association held in New Orleans. In 1976, she volunteered as secretary of the “Save Our Station” and Bicentennial committees in Pascagoula. Eleonora was also very active in the Pascagoula Newcomer’s Club where she served on numerous volunteer committees. In New Orleans, Mrs. Vogt was a member and officer in the Yugoslav-American Club, the Aurora Plantation Club and the New Riverside Homemakers Club. Her many interests included oil painting, travel, and masking for Mardi Gras. She was a member of the Krewes of Hera and Iris for many years. As a genealogist, she compiled and produced a family book and DVD titled “It’s all about family.” Eleonora was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Alvin Henry Vogt; her parents, Matthew John Barbier, Sr. and Florence Wenholz Barbier; two brothers, Matthew John Barbier, Jr and Frederick John Barbier; and a sister, Joan Marie Barbier. Mrs. Vogt is survived by her sister, Dorothy Barbier Meyer (the late John Sr.); sister in law, Melva Weber Barbier (the late Frederick); nieces Jonelle Meyer Archibald (the late Daniel Sr.) of Lafayette LA and Carol Mary Barbier of Robert, LA; nephews John Meyer II (Tracy) of Katy, TX, and Jeffrey Matthew Meyer (Lora) of New York, NY; grandnephews Daniel James Archibald II of Denver, CO, Nicholas James Meyer (Colleen) of Long Beach, IN, Gifford Shelly Meyer (Blair) of New York, NY; grandnieces Jennifer Meyer Schiller (Drew) of Katy, TX, and Leslie Katherine King of Cincinnati, OH; and seven great-grandnieces and one great-grandnephew. A closed casket visitation will be held at JACOB SCHOEN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 3827 Canal Street, New Orleans, LA. On August 5, 2017 from 9:00-11:00 AM, followed by a memorial service in the J. Garic Schoen Chapel.  Burial will then immediately commence at Hope Mausoleum, 4841 Canal Street.
